Pharmacological Effect of Dioscorea hispida
Dioscorea hispida, commonly known as the bitter yam, is a tuberous plant found in various parts of Southeast Asia. Traditionally, it has been utilized as a food source during times of scarcity, but its consumption requires meticulous processing to eliminate inherent toxic compounds. Beyond its nutritional aspects, recent scientific investigations have delved into its pharmacological properties, particularly through studies involving animal models.
One notable study evaluated the antitumor activity and antioxidant status of Dioscorea hispida leaves in Swiss albino mice. The research focused on the ethanolic extract of the plant's leaves and its effects on Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma (EAC), a model for studying cancer in mice. The findings revealed that the extract exhibited significant anticancer activity at varying doses, suggesting its potential as a natural antitumor agent. The study also highlighted the antioxidant properties of the extract, which may contribute to its anticancer effects by mitigating oxidative stress—a known factor in cancer progression.
In another investigation, the toxicological effects of Dioscorea hispida were assessed in mice. The study aimed to determine the plant's toxicity levels by administering different doses to the animals and observing various health parameters. The results indicated that higher doses of the plant extract led to toxic symptoms and even mortality in some cases.
